As teachers working with students with EBD we need to be proactive and supportive to ensure they can reach their full potential. Being proactive and figuring out what the child needs is the best way to provide the student with the tools to be successful in the classroom This might take some time and trial and error but in the end the child will benefit from the efforts.
Sometimes it can be hard to find the right “recipe for success” but finding the right intervention, motivation, reinforcement will help the child. Not all students with EBD struggle at school but most do. The hardest students to reach are those with depression because we as teachers do not always notice it, as students are withdrawn and keep to themselves, while we often focus on the ones disrupting class. However, with children who have depression, the right amount of positive reinforcement and praise can go a long way. Students with behavior problems in the classroom need a lot of structure and clear rules. These rules need to be consistent with every student and need to be simple and easy to understand. Having good structure in the classroom, ensures the student what is expected of him/her at that point in time. Clear rules tells the student what is allowed and what is not allowed and the consequences for their actions. |
Establishing positive relationships with students and parents is another key to success when working with a student with an EBD. A positive relationship with the students show that you care and are invested in their education. Having a good relationship with the student will give insight to what they need and how to better help them be successful in the classroom.
Having a positive relationship with the student's parents is also very important, this provides extra support and help. The parents of the child know them the best and can provide strategies that have worked in the past or have not worked. They can be the main advocates for a student so having a good relationship is a must have. Parents should be a crucial part of the team when establishing an IEP or BIP. These plans are created to meet the needs of each individual child and having parental consent is required. The plans created for students are to help them meet goals and become lifelong learners. The plans are set up to help students move past their struggles and towards success. If we as teachers apply all the things we learned in this class, we are positive that we can provide students with what they need to succeed in school, and to have a successful future.
